For some of our customers, speed is everything. Ensuring that their branded mobile app loads quickly and then zips from screen to screen is a KPI that’s not only easily measured, it’s something that sets their app apart from its competitors.
For others, it’s all about conversions. Understanding the purchase rate within the app, the increase in sessions or the boost in average order size that comes from an accelerated app is primary. After all, making money from an app is generally why it’s there in the first place.
Yet ALL mobile apps struggle with network errors. These aren’t errors caused by application servers or origin servers, but by issues in the Internet, especially over congested and unreliable mobile networks. Examples include:
- images that don’t load
- content feeds that leave giant blank holes in the app
- stalling and freezing
- checkout/booking errors
- uploads that fail
These are the issues that users cause 1-star ratings in the app stores, and that help cause app retention rates to plummet.
We’ve got some interesting new data that shows just what an eye-popping difference our SDK makes in normalizing these errors, and in bringing them down dramatically.
This first chart is for a top-tier travel app, showing both the error rates in the app with Neumob app acceleration turned OFF (in grey), and with it turned ON (in orange). Note that regardless of network type – whether slower 3G networks or much faster 4G-LTE and WiFi – Neumob has normalized the app’s error rate to below 1.4%. That’s taking it down from, in the most extreme case, a 9.02% error rate on 3G-EHRPD networks (nearly 1 out of 10 sessions!) to 1.39% on this same network. We even cut the error rate in half on 4G-LTE.
Our second chart is from another mobile travel app, one that operates on a global basis, including on various networks across Africa, South America, Eastern Europe and elsewhere. They, too, have seen their app’s error rate normalized with Neumob ON (orange) vs. with Neumob OFF (grey). The error rate improvement is nearly as dramatic as in our previous example, with the error rate now normalized between 1.93% on WiFi to 2.63% on 3G-HSUPA. This compares favorably, you might say, with the app’s non-Neumob error rate variation of 2.98% all the way up to 7.23%.
What these improved error rates offer an app’s users is predictability and stability. The likelihood of repeated, frustrating, error-filled app experiences is lessened, therefore increasing not only customer satisfaction, but also their willingness to keep the app on their devices (and to use it more frequently). It’s why we’re starting to hear about errors – and their impact on the business – much more frequently from our customers and prospective customers.
